Head of FDF Ueli Maurer joins Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action

Bern, 02.10.2019 - President Ueli Maurer will represent Switzerland in the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action. For the first time, the Head of the Federal Department of Finance (FDF) will participate in the Coalition at the IMF and World Bank Group Annual Meetings in October 2019.

In April 2019, the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action was launched on the initiative of Chile and Finland on the fringes of the Spring Meetings of the Bretton Woods institutions. The Coalition now has more than 40 member countries and has a broad geographical base. The Federal Council has therefore empowered the Head of the FDF, Ueli Maurer, to participate in the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action. The World Bank serves as the secretariat for the Coalition. At present, one meeting per year at ministerial level is planned; the next is scheduled for the IMF and World Bank Group Annual Meetings in October 2019.

The Coalition supports principles that align fiscal policy and public finances with the objectives of the Paris Climate Convention. These correspond to the climate policy guidelines already followed by Switzerland today. There are also synergies with the Confederation's commitment within the OECD framework. The Federal Council regards the opportunities for Switzerland to actively participate in the coalition as given. At the same time, Switzerland's participation in the coalition does not result in any additional political or financial obligations.
