Italy's Minister of Economy and Finance, Fabrizio Saccomanni, visits Switzerland

Bern, 30.01.2014 - Today, the Head of the Federal Department of Finance (FDF), Federal Councillor Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf, met with Italy's Minister of Economy and Finance, Fabrizio Saccomanni, during his working visit to Bern. After the meeting, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Didier Burkhalter, together with Minister Saccomanni, opened the 2nd Forum for dialogue between Switzerland and Italy.

The Head of the FDF and her Italian counterpart, who had already met during last week's WEF Annual Meeting in Davos, took stock of the ongoing negotiations between Bern and Rome on tax and financial issues. They also discussed the voluntary disclosure programme announced by Italy. The negotiations will be pursued in a bid to find a solution that is satisfactory for both parties. A meeting is planned for next month between Jacques de Watteville, State Secretary for International Financial Matters, and Vieri Ceriani, Economic Advisor to Minister Saccomanni.

Following these talks, President Didier Burkhalter and Minister Saccomanni together opened the 2nd Forum for dialogue between Switzerland and Italy, organised in Bern by the Swiss Embassy in Rome in collaboration with the Italian geopolitical magazine "Limes". Lasting two days, the Forum will address the following four key topics: economy and finances; network industry; culture, cross-border issues and migration; and corporate culture, education and research. The 2014 event will bring together around 100 representatives of both countries from the worlds of culture, academia, politics, economics, finance and industry.

Giorgio Napolitano, President of the Republic of Italy, is scheduled to visit Switzerland in May this year.
