Meeting between President Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf and the President of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Italy, Mario Monti

Bern, 12.06.2012 - Today, President Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf paid a working visit to the President of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Italy, Mario Monti. Both parties agreed to press ahead with the tax and financial negotiations between Switzerland and Italy without delay.

The meeting between President Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf and the President of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Italy, Mario Monti, was used to reaffirm the close relations between Switzerland and Italy and to emphasise the mutual desire to resolve the pending bilateral financial and tax matters.

Switzerland and Italy have undertaken to examine the following issues: revision of the double taxation agreement (DTA), existing black lists, the regularisation of assets held in Switzerland by non-resident taxpayers, the introduction of a withholding tax on future investment income, market access and the agreement regarding the taxation of cross-border commuters.

Switzerland and Italy revived the bilateral dialogue on tax matters on 9 May with the announcement of the creation of a joint steering group. The first meeting took place in Rome on 24 May at a technical level. A second meeting is planned for the end of June in Bern.

In addition, the situation in the European Union and Switzerland's European policy were discussed in detail by President Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf and President of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Italy, Mario Monti. The talks took place in an open and constructive atmosphere.
