Appointment of the Swiss representative on the International Monetary Fund's Executive Board

Bern, 16.04.2020 - Today, the Federal Council appointed Marcel Peter, currently Deputy Director and Head of Multilateral Coordination at the Swiss National Bank (SNB), to be Switzerland's representative on the IMF Executive Board. His term of office will begin on 1 November 2020 at the latest.

Marcel Peter has a PhD in Economics. In 2002, after three years at a Swiss big bank, he joined the SNB as a research assistant. Between 2003 and 2005, he was seconded to the IMF staff in Washington D.C. Subsequently, he was a Senior Economist in the SNB's International Research and Technical Assistance unit. In 2010, he returned to the IMF as Senior Advisor to the Swiss Executive Director. Following his return from Washington in 2013, he became Advisor to the Head of International Monetary Cooperation. Since 2016, Marcel Peter has been Deputy Director and Head of Multilateral Coordination at the SNB in Zurich.

Switzerland's representative on the IMF Executive Board maintains the country's interests in strategic, operational and administrative questions. Marcel Peter's term of office will begin on 1 November 2020 at the latest. At that time, the term of office of the current Executive Director, Paul Inderbinen, will end and the position will be held for the next two years by Poland. This is in line with the agreement concluded with Poland in April 2012, under which both countries occupy the post of Executive Director alternately for a period of two years each. Thus, Marcel Peter will be Deputy Executive Director until 31 October 2022, and Executive Director of the Swiss IMF constituency from 1 November 2022.

In addition to Switzerland and Poland, the Swiss constituency in the Bretton Woods institutions (IMF and World Bank) comprises Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Serbia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
