SIF takes the pulse of the green fintech sector

The Federal Council sees sustainable finance as a great opportunity for the Swiss financial centre. The combination of digital technology and sustainable financial services is particularly promising. For this reason, the State Secretariat for International Finance (SIF) recently conducted a survey within the Swiss green fintech sector.

The Swiss financial centre should further strengthen its position as a leading location for sustainable financial services. The Federal Council emphasised this in its report on sustainability in the financial sector dated 24 June 2020. The Federal Council therefore intends to shape the framework conditions in such a way that, firstly, the competitiveness of the Swiss financial centre is continuously improved and, secondly, the financial sector can make an effective contribution to sustainability in line with the UN's 2030 Agenda.

Not only existing players such as banks and insurers are instrumental in achieving these ambitions, but also new ones. Thanks to their focus on digital technologies and their innovative power, Swiss green fintech companies are well positioned to actively shape the fundamental change in the financial industry towards sustainability. SIF carried out a survey to discover where the fintech sector sees opportunities for concrete technological applications and where there may be obstacles for Swiss green fintechs in terms of funding, availability of data or regulatory environment.

The results will be used as input for SIF's further work in the area of sustainable finance.
