On 10 and 11 December 2018, State Secretary Jörg Gasser paid a working visit to Madrid. He met with high-ranking representatives from Spanish business and the Ministry of Finance, among others.
At the core of the discussion with State Secretary Ana de la Cueva (Ministry of Economy and Business) were issues concerning financial market regulation as well as cooperation in cross-border financial services, the EU equivalence regimes, in particular in the context of Brexit, and current topics in the area of fintech.
State Secretary Gasser discussed with State Secretary Inés María Bardón and General Director Maria José Garde (Ministry of Finance) in particular issues on the exchange of information in the area of taxation, notably topics relating to the Global Forum on Transparency and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes (Global Forum). Spain is currently Chair of the Global Forum, a member of the Peer Review Group and Chair of the Steering Group

On the evening before the discussions with the Spanish authorities, a reception was held at the Swiss Embassy where State Secretary Gasser made a speech in front of over one hundred invited guests. The main topic was the current developments in Switzerland's relations with the EU: State Secretary Gasser advocated improved access for Swiss financial service providers and banks to the European market.
