Switzerland suspends exchange of tax-related information with Russia

During its meeting on 16 September 2022, the Federal Council decided to stop transmitting tax-related information to the Russian Federation for the time being.

The Federal Council based its decision on the public policy (ordre public) reservation of the Convention on Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters. Switzerland is thus reacting in the same way as all European Union member states, the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, for example.

The temporary suspension affects all forms of tax-related information exchange vis-à-vis the Russian Federation, i.e. the automatic exchange of information on financial accounts and country-by-country reports, the exchange of information on request and the spontaneous exchange of information.

With its decision, the Federal Council has moreover confirmed the position of various Swiss courts and authorities that have already suspended their activities in connection with administrative and mutual assistance in tax matters vis-à-vis the Russian Federation.
